We are pleased that the Australian Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee accepted our submission to its inquiry on the management of Defence estate assets. Our submission pointed to deficiencies with the ‘Defence Estate Audit Report’ and the Australian Government’s response to that report. But the thrust of our submission was to encourage the parliamentary committee to strike an appropriate balance between efforts to secure our national defence with preserving in public hands those military installations of historical importance to Australia. A nation that does not preserve its past does not protect its future.
